media infrastructure and generative continuation beyond the studio room

In a room where plastic connectors click into an unfinished structure, the next move is still a hand deciding which piece belongs beside which joint. The click is small and decisive. Geometry waits in the palm until the joint accepts it, and the structure changes by one relation. Heat from the lamp, a slight give in the polymer, the soft resistance before the piece seats: these are facts before any theory of authorship. Erik Åberg’s Division Dialogues keeps returning to rooms like this: juggling broken into throws, catches, balances, and body rolls, then recombined under a method he names reduct-construct; cubes assembled and mirrored into sculptures; newspaper fragments lifted from their original pages and set beside one another until a new adjacency speaks (Åberg 2026a).

He does not claim to have invented the juggling habit. Performers already decompose patterns and rebuild them, often beside siteswap and other generative inventories of what a body and objects can exchange. What the research does is name the habit, follow it across domains, and watch what happens when a delimited premise is allowed to generate more forms than the maker can keep under personal jurisdiction. In the head-roll studies the procedure can feel almost clerical: identify components, separate them, order them, catalogue combinations, as if taste had stepped aside for inventory. Sol LeWitt’s serial “clerk” who catalogues the results of a premise sits near this posture (LeWitt 1966). Subjectivity remains in the choice of variables and in the decision of when the field is complete enough to stop (Åberg 2026a, Conclusion). Second-order authorship begins there: someone still frames the field, even when each resulting form is left to the catalogue.

The juggler-sculptor chapter makes the same coupling tactile from another angle. Object-making and manipulation inform one another continuously. Diagrams of duration ask who paces the experience: artist, spectator, or both. Diagrams of interaction rise from looking, through talking and touching, toward audience hands that assemble modular variants after a performance (Åberg 2026a, Ch. II). The toy that can be sold in stores and the model of participation share one plastic grammar. Mass-produced juggling plastics already train the hand to expect a toy grammar, so seriousness is half-decided before any factory dispute begins. Material expectation is culture arriving early, in the hand.

Once the method has a name, the name travels farther than any single performance. Before articulation, the practice lives in bodies, workshops, and objects. After articulation, other people can recognize related work, refuse the label, borrow the strategy, or misread it. Åberg’s archival book Cleverer Than God shows the same pressure at the scale of a title: a press query about Paul Cinquevalli becomes a book name that can invite an inference about the author the text does not warrant. In Dialogue Notes he writes that the title “sets a condition in which an inference is available, though not warranted” (Åberg 2026b; Åberg 2023). Words placed before reading already redistribute what readers think they have been told. The same grammar appears when instructions, examples, and system prompts sit in front of uncertain production: prior language orients later assemblies without containing them (amaaov 2026e).

The research then watches the work leave the original jurisdiction. Carlo Cerato meets Abercubes and builds extremely light cubic structures that can be moved with breath as well as hands, a continuation still close to juggling practice. The plastic construction system that began as Ghostcube, later Abercube, and commercially as TECTI, becomes a patented product (Swedish application no. 1851306-9) and later appears as unauthorized manufacture in factories in China and the Philippines. At Karolinska Institutet, Björn Högberg’s group and Boxuan Shen reinterpret one of Åberg’s sculptures as DNA origami at the nanoscale, a lineage he traces to his practice even when similar forms could arise by other routes (Åberg 2026a, Conclusion). Intellectual property reads the factory episode as dispute. Generative method reads it as philosophically awkward continuation: if the research has tried to reduce the selecting agent in the formation of structures, other agents and environments seem to keep executing the premise.

Reflecting on the industrial copies, Åberg records a conversation with Theo Jansen on 25 May 2015:

Jansen’s Strandbeest, kinetic PVC animals that have been widely imitated, prompts a formulation that turns the inventor’s mastery sideways (Åberg 2026a, fn. 17). Elsewhere Jansen has described publishing a dimensional code students download, build, vary, and print (Jansen 2014). The creature seems to walk through classrooms and printers. Look closer and the walkers are people, websites, moulds, and incentives; the plans reproduce by recruiting builders (Bernoff 2015). The idea has causal reach; it does not have hands.

What makes that reach possible is rarely the inner vitality of a form alone. A form must become visible, measurable, named, patented, photographed, listed, filmed, searchable, or otherwise addressable. Åberg’s own project already lives among media: a Cinquevalli press archive of roughly 27,000 items; private collectors such as Larry Weeks, whose shelves hold films, contracts, and Houdini reels before history books do; patent drawings; and the film Practice Excerpts (Åberg 2026a, Ch. I). In Weeks’s apartment the past is inventory and negotiation, pinky rings and abrasive charm, a collector’s room where juggling history is stored as objects that can be sold, conserved, or forgotten. The reproductive question sharpens when media stop being only evidence and become infrastructure: when a practice can be detached from its room as an organization other people and machines can execute.

Start again from juggling without a camera. The sequence is performer, movement, objects, witnesses, memory. Someone may imitate, teach, misunderstand, or be inspired, and every continuation passes through another body, so transmission stays lossy and situated. Historical priority survives as testimony. Put a recording between the event and later practice and the sequence changes. The performance acquires a second life as an encoded trace that can be paused, slowed, compared, copied, and sent across a border without the performer, the clubs, or the original floor. Technical reproduction can place that copy in situations out of reach for the originating room (Benjamin 1935). The file is not the whole event; framing, compression, and microphone position have already selected a projection. Sweat, weight, peripheral danger, and the spectator’s freedom to look elsewhere remain incompletely captured. The file is exactly reproducible as a media object, and that is enough. A community can point to a timestamp, a URL, a named throw. Authorship becomes attachable. Originality becomes comparable.

Once the file travels by wire, access no longer requires entering the situation that produced the act. The viewer invokes a performance-trace through an interface. That is already a thin form of self-service without contact: capacity arrives while the productive plant, specialised labour, and originating room stay elsewhere (amaaov 2026a). Two reproductions diverge in the same week. One juggler watches and attempts the movement with another body. Another account reposts the clip and no new juggling happens at all. The social presence of a performance no longer requires another performance.

Digital encoding goes further by making the trace machine-addressable. Pose estimation, trajectory extraction, recommendation, and generative interpolation turn the recording into data that can be ranked and recombined. The staircase can be felt as one continuous pressure: ephemeral event; selective representation; reproducible trace; telecommunicated access; computational decomposition; then the threshold where a socially operative juggling-like effect can be assembled without a corresponding originating night in a hall. At that threshold, fidelity to an origin matters less than sufficiency for a request: price, predicted demand, platform ranking, a prompt, a buy button. That is the condition called post-simulacrum in earlier work on this site: production seeking a sufficient effect from available traces, without ownership of the plant or contact with the operators, and sometimes without the prior existence of the represented event (amaaov 2026a; amaaov 2026b).

The factory that reverse-engineers TECTI from samples, listings, and tooling assumptions sits on that staircase. It does not need the studio night in which a cube first clicked into place. It needs enough actionable organization to mould plastic at scale. Jansen’s dimensional code sits there too: numbers travel farther than beach wind. Cerato’s breath-cubes and Shen’s molecular model show other channels (conversation, shared objects, laboratory reinterpretation) where lineage still depends on what became visible enough to be taken up. Unauthorized industrial copying can remain ordinary imitation. It approaches the post-simulacral condition when later copies copy copies, when exact fidelity becomes irrelevant, when the customer only needs a sufficient object, and when provenance disappears beneath the transaction.

In the same historical weather, symbolic surrounds are increasingly assembled on demand. Inferentia names the mechanism of continuous assembly, ranking, and regeneration; Probabilisticum names the regime in which reality is mediated by that mechanism, a corridor of variations around a core, with the older shared public figure no longer the only weather (amaaov 2026c). Reduct-construct shares underdetermination with that regime and remains a different instrument: a human combinatorial practice inside a framed field, evaluated by contact, error, and recovery as much as by novelty (amaaov 2026d). The chat window makes the regime tactile. A draft arrives plausible before it is true; continuations behave like paint; the useful work is feeding context until something survives a real repo, a real rehearsal, a real customer (amkisko 2025). Fluency can outrun judgment. Manual gravity has to be kept by hand when the medium offers initiation as a comfort (amkisko 2026a; amkisko 2026b).

Once performers expect recording, the camera enters the room before the throw. Movements favour front-facing planes, short combinations, clean success takes, and legibility on a small screen. Gradual development, peripheral action, and recovery may thin. The performance anticipates inspection the way a musician anticipates the waveform that appears before judgment on a timeline (amaaov 2026a). For juggling the camera becomes an invisible fourth object. DIY can feel like freedom while compressing performer, prop maker, editor, publisher, and data source into one unpaid chain, with the platform retaining storage, ranking, and the right to cut access. Culture, as media classification, begins selecting practice in advance: will this read as juggling on video, can it be credited, can it circulate. The upload becomes a condition of legitimacy the way a patent becomes a condition of product addressability.

Media made the work’s organization portable enough that other people and machines could keep executing it. Visibility, transmissibility, addressability, and distribution power decide which premises travel: why this object was available to be copied, which traces preserved enough information to reconstruct it, how a name or patent connected it to a market, which networks made copies more numerous than the studio original. Before durable recording, anonymity can mean the act simply did not travel. After generative mediation, authorlessness can mean too many mediated contributions have been compressed into one effect. Those conditions look similar on the surface and arise by opposite routes.

Responsibility stays with actors even when metaphors of living sculptures are beautiful. Someone still chooses what to mould, whose labour to use, which protections to ignore, which clips to rank, and which synthetic continuations to treat as evidence. Probabilistic production redistributes selection; it does not abolish power. It often conceals power by making outcomes appear emergent. Keep the media chain in view whenever a cube, a clip, or a creature seems to walk away on its own: from the click in the hand, through the name and the patent, through the file and the factory, to the interface that returns a sufficient next instance without ever needing the room where the first joint was decided.
